Cam replacement comparison

Many industrial machines are built to last for decades, but their long-term reliability often depends on the condition of critical wear components, particularly cams and camshafts.

In industries such as printing, packaging, pharmaceutical production, can-making, power generation, and marine engineering, worn or damaged cams can affect machine timing, reduce accuracy, and lead to costly unplanned downtime.

Polgain manufactures precision replacement cams and bespoke camshafts to help customers keep valuable machinery running, including where original drawings no longer exist, and OEM support has long since ended. In this article, we have explained where we can help in more detail.

Why cams wear

Cams are fundamental to many machines, converting rotary motion into precise timed movement to control feeding systems, valve timing, indexing, cutting operations, and synchronised production sequences. As they operate under constant load, friction, and repeated contact cycles, wear is inevitable. Even small changes to cam profile can affect timing accuracy, output quality, and overall machine performance.

Manufacturing from samples

A significant part of what we do involves manufacturing directly from existing components rather than drawings. Using precision measurement equipment and profile analysis, we can reverse engineer worn or damaged cams to produce accurate replacements that restore the original operating characteristics of the machine.

This is particularly useful where equipment has outlasted OEM support, drawings have been lost, or machines have been modified over time. We work from supplied samples, capturing critical dimensions and profiles to produce components that perform as the original was intended to.

Machine rebuilds and refurbishment

Replacing an entire machine is rarely practical or economical. Rebuilding key assemblies and fitting precision replacement cams is often a far more cost-effective route to restoring performance, and it’s an area where we regularly support customers through the process.

Whether the project involves a single worn component or a broader refurbishment of cam-driven assemblies, we can produce the parts needed to bring machinery back to reliable operation.

Large diesel engines and camshafts

Camshafts in marine, power generation, and industrial diesel engines operate under demanding conditions and are critical to engine timing and reliability.

Wear or damage can result in reduced performance or significant mechanical failure. Our precision grinding and manufacturing capability allows us to produce replacement camshafts to the tight tolerances these applications demand.

What Polgain offers

Polgain combines traditional engineering experience with modern CNC machining and grinding capability. As cam manufacturers, we produce one-off replacement parts, small batches, and components for full machinery rebuilds, working directly with customers to find practical solutions for difficult or obsolete components.

If you have a worn cam, a damaged camshaft, or a machine awaiting parts that are no longer available, we’re happy to discuss what’s possible.
